Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel was born on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. After her mother died when Chanel was 11, she was sent to a convent-run orphanage, where she learned to sew. At 18, she moved to Moulins and later pursued a brief career as a café singer, where she earned the nickname "Coco."
In 1910, Chanel opened her first millinery shop in Paris with the help of her lover, Arthur "Boy" Capel. Her practical and elegant designs soon gained popularity, leading her to open boutiques in Deauville and Biarritz. Chanel revolutionized women's fashion by introducing comfortable and chic clothing, such as jersey sportswear, the Chanel suit, and the iconic little black dress.
Chanel's influence extended beyond clothing to include jewelry, handbags, and the legendary Chanel No. 5 perfume, introduced in 1922. Despite controversy during World War II for her association with a Nazi officer, Chanel made a successful comeback in 1954, reestablishing her fashion house. She continued to work until her death on January 10, 1971, at the Hotel Ritz in Paris.
